The CurriculumBy curriculum we mean all planned learning which takes place in the school. We teach all National Curriculum subjects plus R.E. (Religious Education) and P.S.H.E. (Personal, Social, and Health Education). The National Curriculum is made up of ten different subjects; English, Mathematics, ICT (Information and communication technology) and Science are the core of the curriculum and History, Technology, Geography, Music, PE and Art are the foundation subjects. Our Reception class follow a Foundation Curriculum which precedes the above and is tailored to the educational needs of very young children. An hour is allocated each day to both English and Mathematics and the children have plenty of opportunities to apply skills and knowledge learnt in other lessons. I.C.T. is a rapidly growing part of the curriculum and the children use this technology with growing confidence and expertise. Links are made between subjects where appropriate and we are developing these links to make the curriculum as relevant to the children as we can. We believe it is very important to have a balanced curriculum and we ensure the children have opportunities to develop creatively, physically and academically. We are lucky to have attractive school grounds and we use the field and playground for games lessons. We also use the field, copse and wild life garden to support the science curriculum.
We believe educational visits play a vital part in children’s learning and the children have the opportunity to visit local museums, places of worship and other sites of interest. The children in Year Four go swimming as part of the P.E. curriculum. There are also opportunities for residential visits. This year children from Year Four spent 3 days on the Isle of Wight at “Little Canada” and children from Year Five spent three days in London visiting a number of museums and places of interest, going on the London Eye and visiting the theatre. Both visits were very enjoyable and helped the children develop their independence and self confidence. R.E. is taught throughout the school. The children study Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism exploring many different aspects of each religion. You have the right to withdraw your child from these lessons and should inform the Head teacher if you wish to do so. Our P.S.H.E. programme includes sex education. We work with the school health service to deliver this part of the programme. You will be informed when your child is involved and there will be an opportunity to view the resources used and ask questions. Again you have the right to withdraw your child from these lessons. Please notify us if you wish to do so.
